Kanu Sanyal:

Complimented the organisers for holding a seminar on socialism, the legendary revolutionary leader Kanu Sanyal, who also co-chaired the seminar, said that after the Soviet Union, the first Socialist state was destroyed in 1991, the East European countries had also started falling down. This made the entire capitalist world claim that socialism was not the alternative to capitalism and that Marxism was obsolete. So, there was chaos throughout the communist would, throughout the understanding of the people of the world. Everybody asked what was the future. He said the imperialist and capitalist countries were also experiencing difficulties.

Referring to the speech of comrade A K Roy, who said that socialism could not produce anything and failed to show any alternative after the fall of Soviet Union, comrade Sanyal explained that the US economy was also undergoing a great depression; some sort of recession was going on over there. He said the technological development in the capitalist world has led to consumerism and for its products it wanted to create a New World, new types of colonies according to their wishes.

“Do you think every facility of that capitalist society has reached the masses. What we see is that there is darkness below that light in the United States…They want profit … They can show the people the path of development but we're seeing that for their own purpose they have today started a new war. They are creating this situation in so many countries, they have already targeted them like North Korea, they want exclusive power over the poor world. That is imperialistic as many other comrades, who've participated in this discussion, they've rightly been telling us. People won't tolerate it. So our question is, Marx or Angles, while explaining Utopian socialism, let has given a very elaborate history of socialist ideas, Utopian socialist ideas and how scientific socialism came. It didn't come through the brains, it's a question of production so, if there is any thing to be done, if we want any alternative, that alternative is not capitalism but socialism.

“The Soviet Union, China and other countries are also trying to develop their kind of socialism in their countries. So, it is sure that this is the path. But what I feel is that it should not be any modern. The basic question should be there. You cannot provide everything to the people if you do not expropriate the owners of modes of production. If you do not expropriate them you cannot provide that. If the mode of production should be in you hands, in the hands of the people, those who are working in the fields and those who are working in the factories then they will decide how to use it. There is no place of Utopian understanding but rightly, as our participants in this discussion were saying, just what's the history of capitalism and you how in three hundred to four hundred years we've seen the ups and downs. But we've seen their exploitation, we've seen their downfall and at the same time so many things.

“I don't know what China will do or not do. I'm not at all bothered about it. I'm bothered that we Indians want socialism. So we will try to build up socialism in our country … If we want to build up socialism we have to destroy the destructive nature of capitalism, especially the imperialists. We must destroy them first.” He said that there were so many problems in building a socialist state and that some people would say there was no morals of socialism. “That is not correct. There is debate on that issue. How the exchange will take place in a socialist state is a problem. This is to be resolved by us through our practice. Through our building of socialism and so there will be errors in that and we will have to correct those errors. We should not think that everything is lost.”
